The Wayfarer Redemption by Sara Douglass
The Wayfarer Redemption by Sara Douglass is a wonderful beginning to a two part trilogy series. It is a fantasy story with classic elements, such as love, hate, betrayal, and ultimately redemption. There is a complex family web that is weaved and not fully revealed at first. The issue of racism is also a predominate theme. Three different races of people, the Archarites, the Avar, and the Icarii. The Archarites have oppressed the two other races for a thousand years and have eliminated them from the history of the Archarites, reducing the proud, hidden cultures to the "Forbidden Ones." The story is told in a linear way, going back and forth between all of the main characters. There are at least three main characters, Axis, Faraday, and Azhure, and the list is longer as the story progresses. There is an array of supporting characters, all with their parts to play. The Wayfarer Redemption is a beautiful story that will keep the reader on edge, waiting for the final conclusion.

The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman
Philip Pullman's first book of His Dark Material series is The Golden Compass. It is comparable to any of the great fantasy stories, including The Chronicles of Narnia and The Lord of the Rings. It is without a doubt suitable for children and yet enjoyable and thought provoking for adults. It is a tale about a power struggle between ambitious people, Lord Asriel and Mrs. Coulter and her Oblation Board, and the girl caught in the middle whose choice will change the fate of the world. Lyra Belacqua is the heroine with no comprehension of how important her role is. She just wants to save her friend who was kidnapped. Lyra must be allowed to make her decisions, good and bad, without anyone's help or all is lost. And she is the only person who can read the golden compass, the alethiometer, which is a truth teller. This story is complex and suspenseful and will have the reader begging for more.
